How to build influence at work

  • Apr 1, 2025

Hello Drivver,

We chatted about Influence at Work at our last Drivvers’ meeting, and we all agreed that it’s one of the critical skills for career advancement and leadership.

It’s not about power or titles, it’s about earning trust, respect, and credibility through your actions and interactions. Whether you’re aiming for a promotion, managing a team, or collaborating with peers, here are some proven tactics to help you build influence and make a lasting impact.

    Deliver Consistently

Why it Matters: Reliability builds trust. People gravitate toward those who follow through on promises and meet deadlines. Consistency in performance shows professionalism and earns respect. As leaders and managers, we’ve always assigned tasks and projects to the team members we can trust to follow through.

Action Tip: Use the Drivvers’ Time Management tool to help you manage your time and tasks successfully - https://www.drivvers.com/careertoolsandresources

    Be Solution-Oriented

Why it Matters: Anyone can spot a problem,  but influential professionals focus on solutions. Being a problem-solver shows that you're resourceful, proactive, and committed to progress, and not focused on blame. It positions you as a trusted team member and a go-to leader, since people are drawn to those who don’t dwell on what went wrong, but instead help them move forward with clarity and confidence.

Action Tip: Before presenting an issue, brainstorm at least two potential solutions that you can bring to the conversation. This will show that you approach conversations with a constructive mindset to drive progress. If you are a manager, ask your team to bring solutions when discussing challenges. This way, you will help them build a solution-oriented mindset.

    Practice Active Listening

Why it Matters: People feel valued and respected when they know they’re heard. Active listening strengthens relationships and fosters collaboration.

Action Tip: Focus entirely on the speaker, avoid interrupting, and paraphrase what you hear to confirm understanding. Show empathy and use phrases as “I hear you” and “I understand”.

    Share Knowledge

Why it Matters: Teaching others not only helps the team grow but also establishes you as a leader. Sharing knowledge fosters trust, respect, and influence. This is one of your core principles as a Drivver. Together is the only way forward!

Final Thoughts, Influence isn’t built overnight, but with consistency, problem-solving, active listening, knowledge-sharing, and genuine support, you can position yourself as a trusted leader. Start applying these tactics today and watch your impact grow.
